NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING AT HOLT

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is the process of inspecting, testing, or evaluating materials, components or assemblies for discontinuities, or differences in characteristics without destroying the serviceability of the part or system. In other words, when the inspection or test is completed the part can still be used.

HOLT’s nondestructive tests are used on inspections to ensure product integrity and reliability, to find internal flaws, metal fatigue and wear, detect leaks, find faulty or leaky parts, test strength and find defects, all while the machine is still in service. NDT inspections are used to ensure that the products in use continue to have the integrity necessary to ensure their usefulness and safe operation.

ULTRASONIC TESTING

ULTRASONIC TESTING detects internal flaws and is used to characterize materials, often in steel and other metals and alloys. Ultrasonic thickness measurement is used to monitor bucket and blade wear.

ULTRASOUND/ACOUSTICS

ULTRASOUND/ACOUSTICS is used for leak detection, mechanical analysis, and electrical inspection. Typical applications include leak detection, and vacuum pressure. This test detects electrical discharges such as corona, tracking and arcing, identifies faulty valves and steam traps, tracks trends in mechanical operations, including bearings, and helps prevent under- and over-lubrication conditions in bearings.

PORTABLE HARDNESS/TENSILE STRENGTH TESTING

PORTABLE HARDNESS/TENSILE STRENGTH TESTING measures the maximum amount of tensile stress that a material can take before failure. Bolts, rods, and other components can be tested before reinstalling them in the field or a shop environment.

VISUAL INSPECTIONS

VISUAL INSPECTIONS performed by a qualified inspector check the product for visual defects that can occur during operation. This extends from cracks in the welds to defects in the material structure.

INFRARED INSPECTION

INFRARED INSPECTION is commonly used for detecting thermal anomalies caused by the degradation of electrical and mechanical equipment, which manifest by overheating or abnormally low temperature, and can be used while the equipment is running or energized.

DYE PENETRANT (PT)

DYE PENETRANT (PT) is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to locate surface-breaking defects in all non-porous, non-ferrous and ferrous materials. PT is used to detect casting, forging, and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity, leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks in service components.

MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING

MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING, dry or wet, is accomplished by inducing a magnetic field in a ferromagnetic material and then dusting the surface with iron particles. The surface produces magnetic poles and distorts the magnetic field in such a way that patterns in the iron particles make defects visible on the surface of the material.
